We all matter to God because each of us has an irreplaceable purpose or role to play in furthering His message of love in the world. Take for example animals... every living thing has its purpose and plays a significance in our lives. Did you notice the OWLS 🦉 on the table in the family photo I posted? My Mom collected these mysterious animals and I was blessed to inherit a few of them from her beautiful collection.
Each time I pass by her owls, I can remember Mother saying, “Be wise like the owl. If we speak less, it’ll allow us to be observant and hear more.”
“...He (or she 😂) who restrains his lips is wise.” (Proverbs 10:19)
And... Follow the owl’s example. Don’t just think about yourself, think about HOOO you can serve.
In the olden days, owls were symbols of status, intelligence and wealth. Native Americans associate owls with wisdom, foresight, and keeper of sacred knowledge. There’s also an old adage:
A wise old owl sat in an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard;
Why can’t we all be like this wise old bird?
God takes delight when no corrupt communication proceeds out of our mouths. He tells us, “Be kind one to another, be tenderhearted and be forgiving...” He loves it when we edify and inspire each other.
“The Spirit of the Lord is a spirit of kindness; it is a spirit of patience; it is a spirit of charity and love and forbearance and long suffering; and there are none of us who do not need all these virtues that are the result of the possession of the Spirit of our Heavenly Father." (George Albert Smith)
So when we get upset, let’s choose to be WISE and bite our tongue or else, we may utter some harsh words we might regret later. We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak, right? This Sunday let us ponder upon my Mother’s words, and “be swift to hear, slow to speak, and use our two big eyes like owls to exercise the spirit of kindness.”
